Google Offers Free WiFi for India: but will they censor content?

Google has announced that it is to offer free WiFi acrossIndia, in an attempt to promote the use of their social network Google+, andaffiliated sites such as YouTube. There is currently less than 10% Internetpenetration in India, this service will greatly benefit consumers in India. Ofcourse, it will also benefit Google, whose Android phones are in competitionwith other popular smartphones such as the BlackBerryBellagio and the Nokia Lumia.

However, the announcement comes at an interesting time, after Delhi High Court ordered Google India, along with Facebook India, tomoderate their content, or face being blocked. Justice Suresh Kaitsaid “LikeChina, we will block all such websites.”

It has been argued in response to this that Google is notresponsible for third-party content, making it unfeasible for the search engineto really be blocked. Mukul Rohatgi testified that “No human interference ispossible, and moreover, it can’t be feasible to check such incidents. Billionsof people across the globe post their articles on the website. Yes, they may bedematory, obscene, but cannot be checked.”

It seems that Google in India may be safe for now. But howwill they make sure that people access the Google websites, rather thancompetitors? They’re offering the free WiFi on the basisof unlimited usage of Google+, and ten minutes of access to YouTube. Users whowish to access other websites will pay by the minute, limiting access to rivalsites such as Facebook and Yahoo.

Google is offering this service in association with O-ZoneNetworks. O-Zone Networks CEO Sanjeev Sarin said: “This is a first-of-its-kindpromotional tie-up. This association between Google India and O-Zone Networksreinforces the fact that people are now realising the power of Wi-Fi.”

For your information, presently O-Zone network has 5,000Wi-Fi access points across India and these access points includes  McDonalds, Café Oz, Cafe Coffee Day CostaCoffee, Subway, OM Bookshop and Coffee Bean.

What do you think about Google’s move to provide free WiFiin India, do share your thoughts in comment section below.

WORLD'S FIRST SELF-HEALING iPhone CASE

Nissan brings automotive innovation to the world of technology
Nissan announces unique self-healing iPhone case - the Nissan Scratch Shield iPhone case
The case uses innovations from the automotive world to create a robust iPhone case, including Nissan's pioneering self-healing paint finish
Nissan's Scratch Shield paint is a world first in paint technology that allows fine scratches to quickly mend themselves
Addition benefits such as scratch-resistant and easier-to-grip than normal glossy phone surfaces
The Nissan Scratch Shield iPhone case is made from ABS plastic - a high grade substance widely used in the automotive industry to create a more rigid, robust, and tighter-fitting case
Trial underway with initial batch of prototypes

Rolle, Switzerland, 16 January 2012: Nissan today announced the latest piece of must-have kit for the iPhone* - a ground-breaking self-healing iPhone case. The Nissan Scratch Shield iPhone case features the brand's pioneering self-healing paint finish, a world first in paint technology developed in 2005 and already used on a number of Nissan and Infiniti models. Now this ground-breaking technology has been applied to a product that's prone to scratches through everyday use - the smartphone - with Nissan's new Scratch Shield case meaning iPhone-lovers can keep their phone looking at its best for longer.

Developed by Nissan in collaboration with University of Tokyo and Advanced Softmaterials Inc., the unique Scratch Shield paint finish was initially designed for automotive use and is available on the Nissan Murano, 370Z and X-Trail along with the Infiniti range of products.  Now, thanks to Nissan's pioneering approach, this technology is being trialled for the first time on a non-automotive product in Europe, with the Nissan Scratch Shield iPhone case.

The Nissan Scratch Shield iPhone case has been designed using several automotive engineering innovations to deliver a more durable and long-lasting paint coat, and closely fitting, tight case. The case has three key benefits: the highly flexible and elastic properties of Scratch Shield paint technology allows fine scratches to quickly mend themselves**; its tactile gel-like rather than glossy surface is more scratch-resistant than conventional paint and provides a better grip; and the case itself is made of ABS plastic - a high grade substance widely used in the automotive industry which is more rigid and robust than other plastics. The outer ‘paint' is made from polyrotaxane, which means that when damage occurs to the coating in the form of a fine scratch, the chemical structure is able to react to change back to its original shape and fill the gap - 'healing' the blemish.

An initial batch of prototypes of the innovative Scratch Shield iPhone cases has been produced by Nissan for BETA testing with selected journalists and customers, but if demand proves strong, it will look to put the cases on general sale later this year.

Bob Laishley, Overseas Programme Director Business Development for Nissan in Europe, said: "We like to think laterally by taking the great innovations we've got from an automotive point of view, and looking at how they could be applied to improve everyday issues. The Scratch Shield iPhone case is a great example of us taking a Nissan automotive technology that has had a huge impact for our customers, and then shifting the boundaries to apply it to another everyday product.

"We're really excited about the possibilities provided by this technology. In Japan, we've already linked up with world-leading mobile operator NTT DoCoMo to allow them to use the Scratch Shield technology on its Style Series N-03B mobile phones, and we think this technology has real scope beyond the automotive world. We're passionate about innovations that get people excited, and that means not being restricted to one industry or genre."

Nissan has been licensing its unique technologies for various non-automotive applications since 2004. Other technologies that have been licensed include its Miniature Thermal Imaging Sensor: initially designed to make driving at night safer by detecting the presence of people even in places not illuminated by the car's headlights; the technology has been licensed to create a device which allows customers to monitor heat generation, or collect temperature readings via infrared sensor. Nissan will continue to research and develop breakthrough technologies that can benefit other industries, and promote these non-automotive applications globally.

Nissan has long been an innovator when it comes to advancements in the automotive world, heralding the start of a remarkable new era in motoring when it launched the first Crossover, the Nissan Murano, followed by the hugely-successful Qashqai and recently joined by the Juke - with its innovative fusion of compact SUV and sports car styling. Nissan's range of crossovers has since gone from strength to strength, with the Nissan Qashqai selling more than a quarter of a million models last year in Europe and the newly launched Juke having now notched-up 120 thousand sales. Built in Nissan's manufacturing plant in the UK, these two models helped the plant break its all-time production record to build 480 thousand units in 2011.

Currently the Nissan Juke-R, another Nissan Innovation combining the transmission, drive train and engine of a Nissan GT-R with a Juke, is being put to the test on the streets of Dubai.  To celebrate this event, Nissan has joined forces with Ministry of Sound, who will be hosting a pre-race party for Nissan with internationally renowned DJ Pete Tong, to release the first 100 of the Nissan Scratch Shield iPhone case prototypes.

Notes to editors:
* The Nissan Scratch Shield iPhone case is compatible with the iPhone 4 and iPhone 4 S
**Scratch Shield can heal small scratches in as little as an hour, but more severe cases can take up to a week's time to heal.

AMD's Lightning Bolt: Low Cost Thunderbolt Alternative for USB 3.0/DP

One of the things I love the most about AMD is the balance it provides to Intel. While I've spent much of CES looking for Thunderbolt products and lamenting the cost of controllers and devices, AMD put together a concept it calls Lightning Bolt.

Lightning Bolt is an AMD technology that can deliver USB 3.0, DisplayPort and Power over a single cable with mini DisplayPort connectors. I saw the technology demonstrated live, however I wasn't allowed to take any photos.

The technology is designed to be very simple and affordable. On the notebook side is a mux that combines power, DisplayPort and USB 3.0 into a single DP-like cable. The other end of the cable would connect to a Lightning Bolt breakout box that would provide USB 3.0, DisplayPort and power ports.

The cable is a standard mini-DP cable with changes on only two of the pins. AMD's goal is to enable affordable, single-cable docking stations for notebooks. The cost of the mux and associated components on the notebook side would be minimal, around a dollar. The mux would eventually be integrated into a notebook (the AMD demo had them external for demo purposes) and all you'd see is a mini-DP interface with some sort of indication that it was a Lightning Bolt interface. Given that it's a simple mux on the notebook side I'd assume that it would be possible to enable miniDP passthrough and display Lightning Bolt entirely if you wanted to.

There are performance and power limitations to this design. AMD claimed USB 3.0 transfers would be faster than USB 2.0, but not full speed. No word on how much power you'd be able to send over the interface either. As far as the docking stations go, AMD expects that they'll cost about as much as a USB 3.0 hub.

Lightning Bolt won't be ready in time for Trinity's launch in the middle of the year, but AMD hopes to have it on the market by the end of the year.

Samsung Merging Its Bada OS With Intel-Backed Tizen Project

Samsung said it is working on merging its homegrown “bada” smartphone operating system with Tizen, an operating system project the company is conducting with chipmaker Intel.

Samsung is merging its bada smartphone operating system (shown here) with the Tizen open-source OS it is creating with Intel.

“We have an effort that will merge bada and Tizen,” said Tae-Jin Kang, Senior Vice President of Samsung’s Contents Planning Team in an interview at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES). Kang said he didn’t know when the work would be complete but that it was already underway.

When the integration is finished, Tizen will support mobile applications written with bada’s SDK (software development kit). That support will include backwards compatibility for previously published bada apps.

Post-integration, bada and Tizen developers will be given the same software tools (SDKs and APIs), said Kang. The idea is that if developers know how to program in bada, they will understand how to make Tizen apps, too.

Kang’s remarks are of interest because industry observers have long wondered how the Korean tech giant will juggle its many operating systems. Samsung supports at least four mobile operating systems and has at least two different TV operating systems.

There has also been a lot of industry speculation about the value Samsung attaches to bada and the reason Samsung got involved in Tizen, an industry consortium that is producing an open-source operating system. The Tizen project, which incorporates some technology from Intel’s former MeeGo project with Nokia, kicked off in Sept. 2011.

Samsung uses Google‘s Android platform for its highest-end smartphones and tablets. Samsung also produces several phones that run on Microsoft‘s Window Phone OS.

Samsung has found ways to effectively marshal these outside operating systems — the company is the biggest provider of smartphones globally and the second-largest maker of cellphones overall. But focusing on its own OS would give Samsung more control over its devices and more opportunity to differentiate its products from its competitors’.

Since its 2010 launch, bada (the name means “ocean” in Korean) has found surprising traction, especially given the fact that is only available in certain (non-U.S.) markets. In 2011, bada phones made up about 2% of the global smartphone market — greater than the share held by Microsoft’s Windows Phone.

By merging bada and Tizen, Samsung hopes to tap into the existing bada community, including thousands of bada app developers.

Tablet PC with Windows 8 will be worth between $ 599 to $ 899

Company and Intel have Maicrosoft will soon announce the minimum cost of tablets running on Windows 8, and built on a platform of Intel Clover Trail. Since none of these company still does not want to reduce the cost of its component systems, it is now considering the current settings margin, we can assume that the price per tablet with Windows 8 will range from 600 to 900 dollars. This may have a negative impact on sales of devices, since the difference with ultrabukami, which relies on Intel and components for which it is prepared to lower the price is very low. The tablet will have the advantage of supporting a huge number of programs already written for the OS family of Windows, but will lose a number of parameters ultrabuku. Among the advantages of the latter it is worth noting a large screen size, the hardware keyboard and possibly a larger hard disk. Will they have greater mobility tablet in order to overcome these gains laptop is not clear. compete with the iPad and tablets based on Android operating system at a cost of over $ 600 apiece devices on Windows 8 with Intel chipsets will not. The difference in performance is not great, but the difference in price can negate the advantage of backwards compatibility with the desktop. Company Samsung, Acer, ASUS and Lenovo are ready to engage in the creation of such devices, despite the rather high price, but even reducing their own profits, they are unlikely to achieve the price at which most users would be willing to buy a tablet with Windows 8 and on the platform Intel Clover Trail .

LG’S GLASSES-FREE CINEMA 3D MONITOR CERTIFIED BY UNDERWRITERS LABORATORIES

LG’s D2500 Becomes World’s First Glasses-Free 3D Product to be Certified by
Underwriters Laboratories for its Product Safety

LG Electronics’ (LG) glasses-free CINEMA 3D monitor, the D2500, became the world’s first glasses-free 3D monitor to be certified by UL, (Underwriters Laboratories) for product safety, strengthening LG’s leadership in the glasses-free 3D product segment. The certification was officially presented to LG at last week’s Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas.

“Our glasses-free CINEMA 3D monitors will continue to lead LG in the glasses-free 3D market,” said Havis Kwon, President and CEO of LG Home Entertainment Company. “We will strengthen our glasses-free 3D product line-up to further distance ourselves from the competition.”

D2500 also received the Certificate of Validation on five different types of tests conducted by UL, including those for 2D Color Characteristic, 3D Color Characteristic, 3D Contrast, 3D Crosstalk and 3D Vertical Viewing Angle. UL is internationally renowned for its product quality and safety certifications of electronics products.

The D2500 uses the Parallax Barrier technology, which creates an illusion of depth based on a series of light-blocking barriers attached to the front of the LCD panel, which ensure the left and right eyes see different images. In order to ensure optimal 3D image quality, the D2500 also uses a head-tracking technology that tracks the user’s head and eye positions in real time through the imbedded web cam, thereby adjusting 3D images in accordance with the user’s viewing angle and distance from the CINEMA 3D monitor.

In addition to the UL certification, the D2500 has also been certified by TUV Rheinland as a glasses-free 3D product. TUV lauded the D2500 as exhibiting excellent contrast ratio and color production.

Now Shipping, SAMSUNG SUR40 For Microsoft Surface Dazzles Retailers At National Retail Federation (NRF) Conference 2012

New PixelSenseTM Technology Enables SUR40 to See and Respond to Touch and Objects, Creating New Possibilities for Interactive Displays in a Variety of Settings

Samsung Electronics America Inc., a subsidiary of Samsung Electronics Corporation and the number one worldwide brand of professional commercial display LCD products, is demonstrating its digital solutions leadership at a showcase event featuring the Samsung SUR40 for Microsoft Surface and a variety of applications from development partners at the National Retail Federation (NRF) conference, being held Jan. 16 and 17 at the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center in New York in Room 1A17 (on Level One of the convention center).

Available now through Samsung channel and reseller partners, a CES Best of Innovations 2012 award-winner, the Samsung-Microsoft collaboration incorporates Microsoft Surface 2.0 software and touch technology into an interactive and engaging 40-inch Full HD LCD that can be used horizontally as a table, mounted vertically on a wall or embedded in other fixtures and furniture.

“Both retailers and consumers are adapting to ever-evolving ways of interacting with information and merchandise and have expressed a desire for technology that delivers information in an engaging and visually dynamic way,” said Todd Bouman, vice president of product marketing for Samsung Electronics America, Enterprise Business Division. “With the availability of the Samsung SUR40 for Microsoft Surface, Samsung is energizing the retail space and anticipates an all-new approach to customer engagement.”

Superior Screen, Smart Device
The Samsung SUR40 is an interactive, collaborative multi-touch device, offering a thin, 4-inch profile and a large screen size. It integrates Samsung’s LCD panel capability with touch technology, combining Microsoft’s massive multi-touch and object recognition software to maximize the performance of a brand new type of touch screen technology – PixelSense.

Microsoft’s PixelSense technology – which gives LCD panels the power to see without the use of cameras – and the Microsoft Surface 2.0 software, the premier touch-first experience for end users, have been combined with Samsung’s display leadership to create an industry-changing information display device. The new SUR40 makes it possible for people to share, collaborate and explore together using a large, thin display. Not only can the SUR40 recognize fingers and hands, but it can also detect other objects placed on the screen supporting up to 50 points of contact at one time.

The SUR40 features a 40-inch Full HD 1080p (1920x1080) LCD LED panel combined with one of the world’s largest piece of Gorilla protection glass for optimized screen durability and to protect from external shock and liquid ingress. It provides highly accurate touch interaction from multiple people at the same time and superior object recognition as each pixel has a camera element. Its natural interaction enables users to ‘grab’ digital information with their hands and interact with content through touch and gesture.

The SUR40 also provides developers with the opportunity to build apps that are specialized to vertical user-case scenarios as diverse as hospitality, retail, public sector, professional services, healthcare and finance to name a few. It offers a rich sound experience and can connect to a wide range of peripherals such as bar code scanners, cameras and printers through WiFi (802.11.n), Bluetooth or Ethernet connections to create a seamless digital entertainment environment. Surface 2.0 developers will showcase several never-before-seen solutions for the new device at NRF this week, with an emphasis on innovative retail experiences.

Major consumer brands and other technology partners such as FUJIFILM, Industrial Color, Le Métier de Beauté and Pepsico Beverages Canada have near-term plans to use the Samsung SUR40 to support immersive retail scenarios, professional tools and/or marketing efforts.

“The Samsung SUR40 for Microsoft Surface is an intelligent, specialized device, that can deliver highly-customized, engaging experiences for retailers and their customers,” said Somanna Palacanda, director, Microsoft Surface. “We’re eager to see the impact this innovative technology will have on a variety of industries and to continue to learn about and address customer needs.”

Availability and Pricing
Shipments to customers will begin in January 2012. Estimated Street Pricing for the SUR40 for Microsoft Surface for U.S. customers will start at $8,400 (display only) and $9,049 (tabletop unit with matching stand). Pricing for other countries and/or regions may differ.

Government-grade encryption protects your email, contacts and calendar so you are business ready. Even your strict IT manager will be impressed. Nokia Developer Newsletter confirms Nokia Lumia 900 March release

Thanks to Paul Thurrott we have been expecting the Nokia Lumia 900 to be released in March this year.  Nokia and Microsoft has however been very coy at CES, only talking in vague terms of ‘next few months’.

Now the official Nokia Developer Newsletter has blown the secret, confirming that the handset is expected in March this year.  Paul Thurrott pinned it down more specifically to March 18th, which would be the third Sunday of the month.

Unfortunately similar leaks have not accompanied the HTC Titan II, so we do not know when Nokia’s main Windows Phone LTE competitor will be hitting the network, but it is rumoured that it may be sooner than the Lumia 900.

The contract stipulates that ChinaSoft International will hold 60% of the joint venture and that Huawei will hold 40%.

ChinaSoft International's success as an IT outsourcing provider can be attributed to its experience, its efficient human resource supply system, and its outstanding management, development, and services teams. Huawei is an important client of ChinaSoft International's outsourcing business, and it has experienced firsthand the high quality and cost-effectiveness of ChinaSoft International’s delivery and outsourcing services. Likewise, ChinaSoft International is wholly familiar with Huawei’s high quality management practices. By combining the qualities of both companies into this new joint venture, the vast experience of both companies can contribute to the creation of this new, top-ranking software outsourcing company.

Huawei Marine Begins Manufacturing Phase of Global Financial Network Express Project

Huawei Marine Networks Co., Ltd. (Huawei Marine) announced the signing of a construction contract of Hibernia Atlantic’s Global Financial Network (GFN) Project Express. Huawei Marine recently completed the first phase of the project’s marine survey work and is now commencing the manufacturing of the necessary cables and wet plant for the project.

The Project Express segment of the GFN is scheduled to be ready for service during the summer of 2013. The system will involve a minimum of a 4-fibre pair repeatered submarine cable, providing connectivity between New York and London, initially using 40G technology with upgrades to 100G planned in the future.

The first phase of the system begins with laying a 4600KM cable from Brean in Somerset, United Kingdom to Halifax, Canada. This cable will then connect to Hibernia Atlantic’s current low latency cable, which runs from Halifax to the United States, passing from Lynn, near Boston, and onwards to New York. The new system will also include five branching units for future connectivity enhancements to the United States, Continental Europe, and Ireland.

Project Express will become an essential route on Hibernia Atlantic’s GFN, uniting hundreds of global banks and financial exchanges with a single connection. Built specifically for the financial community, the GFN meets demanding performance and reliability requirements. Project Express will further strengthen the GFN by reinforcing it as the fastest path across the Atlantic, providing additional fast and secure links throughout North America, Europe, and Asia.

As the first transatlantic subsea cable to be built in 10 years, Project Express will offer the lowest latency route from New York to London with less than a 60 millisecond round trip, making it the fastest and most direct route connecting both major continents.

Mr. Bjarni Thorvardarson, Chief Executive Officer, Hibernia Atlantic, said: “Project Express has taken another huge leap forward in the process of deploying the fastest transatlantic connectivity available to our GFN customer base. While we have been working to advance this project through marine surveys and letter agreements, this final closure of the full agreement is a major milestone in delivering this momentous project.”

Mr. Nigel Bayliff, Chief Executive Officer, Huawei Marine, said: “Project Express is an exciting one for Huawei as it allows us to utilize our advanced digital coherent transmission technology, implement our delivery and installation capabilities, and draw on our experience from a number of submarine projects, to complete this significant and technically challenging system. Once completed, we believe that the Hibernia Atlantic Express will be a huge contributor to the faster transport of critical transactions from one key financial city or exchange to the next.”

The MOTOACTV can support low energy devices, like a heart rate monitor, while still having all the functionality Bluetooth technology is known for – transferring data to your phone, streaming music through your wireless ear buds and keeping your hands-free. The integration of workout data with a Bluetooth enabled application on the Droid RAZR completes the picture, making it simple for consumers to put data to practical use on hub devices like smart phones.”

"The MOTOACTV was one of the first Bluetooth Smart devices to come to market, allowing users to enjoy a completely wireless workout and then to view workout history through a Bluetooth enabled app on their Droid RAZR smart phone," said Suke Jawanda, Bluetooth SIG CMO. "From monitoring heart rate, to listening to music to receiving phone calls and text alerts on the MOTOACTV – Bluetooth technology enables all these functionalities.”

A record number of devices were submitted for consideration this year. Each product was carefully reviewed and judged based on a variety of criteria including innovation, interoperability testing, look and feel, and ease of use. Bonus points were awarded to those products that included Bluetooth v4.0. The overall, fan favorite and three category winners were selected out of a pool of ten finalists.
